Whenever we list domains on DDN, we provide some helpful data on the domains we list. Among that data are various bits of Google Search Data, data we get from the Google Keyword Tool. Some of you have asked what this data represents, how we get this data and why we include it with our domains, so we’ve put together this page to help you out.
Google Search Data Terms and Their Importance
Estimated Avg. CPC (Cost-Per-Click): The average amount of money that a Google Adwords advertiser spends per click to advertise on Google search for the particular term. This is an important piece of information as it indicates the value of the traffic searching for that specific term to businesses who want the traffic.
Local Search: The amount of searches for the particular term on Google in the previous month. Our data specifically pulls this using all English-speaking countries and territories. This is relevant to find out the amount of people currently searching for the exact term on Google and helps determine what top rankings on Google could command (#1 for instance typically receives 40% of searches)
Global Monthly Search: The average amount of searches per month for the particular term on Google based on the previous 12 months of search data. This paints the more long-term picture of how many people search for the term on Google and gives a more established indication of monthly traffic that top rankings on the term would garner.
Advertiser Competition: A 0-to-1 scale of how many Google Adwords advertisers there are actively advertising on the term. While we do not include this in the data we provide with our domains in DDN, it is nonetheless important data to help determine which terms may be more lucrative to advertisers than others.
How To Get Google Search Data
As previously mentioned, to retrieve this data for the keywords on our domains, we use the Google Keyword Tool (note that this is the old but far better version of the tool as it operates much quicker and can provide data on up to 300 keyword phrases at a time)
Here is the process to use to get the most relevant data:
- Enter the keyword phrases you wish to check (max 300) into the top text field under “Enter one keyword or phrase per line:”
- To the left of that, where it has “Results are tailored to English, United States” (or whatever it shows for your location), click “Edit” next to that and choose “All Countries and Territories” on the right list. If you are looking up foreign-language terms, then select the appropriate language on the left list.
- Enter the shown captcha text.
- Click “Filter My Results”, then check both boxes shown and click the “Get Keyword Ideas” button. (Note: the alternate use of getting keyword ideas is GREAT for brainstorming and also seeing relevant search terms for a broad topic. To use that feature, enter only the broad topic keyword instead of a full list, and uncheck the top box in this area before clicking “Get Keyword Ideas”)
- Click the drop-down menu under “Choose columns to display:” and click “Show Estimated Avg. CPC”.
- Optional: While we do not include trend data in the info we give on our domains since it doesn’t really translate easily into quantifiable data, that is another indicator we like to look at. In the same drop-down menu, click “Show Search Volume Trends”. One note about this is that often times, it may show fairly different data than Google Trends, so it’s hard to know sometimes how accurate it is.
- Click the “Match Type” drop-down menu on the right just above the data and click “Exact”. This gives data on searches of only the exact terms you put in, which is the most indicative data. ”Broad” gives data on searches for all terms containing both words regardless of word order or location within the term, and “Phrase” gives data on searches for all terms containing both words in correct order.
- Optional: If you want to save this data, at the bottom of the page under the data, there will be a “Download all keywords:” area – click “.csv (for excel)” to download an Excel CSV file containing all the data.
It’s just that easy to get this information which is vital to anyone doing business online. While many businesses are solely focused on buying advertising to get the traffic they want, smart businesses are paying attention to what they can do to get targeted search traffic that will bring in customers/clients to their business, and half the battle is knowing which keywords in your niche command traffic and have value.
Why Google Search Data Is Important When Evaluating Domains
The reason why we share this data on DDN listings and why we feel it is important to consider when evaluating domain names (primarily generic domain names) is because Google and the other search engines have shown time and time again to give extreme favoritism in their search results to sites on domains that exactly match the term being searched. CreditCards.com for instance is handily beating out the 4 major credit companies Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover in Google for the term Credit Cards despite those companies being much larger and far more established. In many cases, simply having an exact keyword matching domain with some content on it is enough to rank page 1 or even #1 on Google, even for terms that may command thousands of dollars per month in steady search traffic. There are many sources that confirm this, the most recent being an extensive study of search engine ranking elements done by popular SEO blog SEOMoz.org.
To understand the money value of a #1 ranking and the potential value these exact keyword matching domains can yield, a loan-related .org domain that was listed and sold on DDN was an exact match for a term with $9.69 Estimated Avg. CPC and 14,800 Global Monthly Search. If it were to rank #1 on Google for the term, which could very well happen with some content on it and SEO applied to it, it would see 14,800 x 40% = 5,920 x $9.69 = roughly $57,364.80 worth of FREE search traffic on average every month. That’s the estimated value of ONLY the #1 ranking on ONLY ONE TERM, which given you’re ranking for that term, you will more than likely rank for other terms containing it and possible related terms as well meaning even MORE value.
Simply put, Google Search Data is among the most important data to pay attention to when marketing anything online. The Google Keyword Tool makes it easy to obtain, and once you utilize it for targeting keywords and start buying domains that can achieve rankings and bring ongoing valuable targeted traffic to your business with no ongoing cost, you’ll never look back!
